David was born in 1961 in Dubuque, Iowa. He was raised in Marion and attended Regis High School, graduating in 1979. David received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Creighton University in 1983 and his Juris Doctor from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1987. Since then, David has practiced law full-time in Cedar Rapids with extensive legal experience in the areas of family law, wills and estates and real estate.

David enjoys volunteering as follows: Coaching (at Regis Middle School and for Xavier High School feeder programs), Knights of Columbus, Greater Cedar Rapids Open and Hope Community Development.

His hobbies include: Golf, tennis, spending time with family and his Smith & Wesson Collection.

David lives in Cedar Rapids with his wife Karen and his two cats, Fuzzy and Maggie. Married since 1986, David and Karen have two sons, Dr. Will Thinnes of Chicago and Dr. Rob Thinnes of Oklahoma City.
